Our Mission

Our mission is to support the educational development of Hispanic/Latino Youth and Women by providing financial aid through scholarship funds and to enhance the quality of life in our community through social and educational programs.

Our Goals

Promote excellence in the areas of education, family relations, community service. Encourage Latin American youth to pursue formal education by offering scholarships.

Increase volunteer involvement to meet the Latin American communities needs.

Sponsor events that develop cultural awareness and appreciation for the arts and sciences. Make community leaders aware of the needs of Latin American women and their families.

LAWA has worked in partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system in various programs such as sponsoring fifth graders from Idlewild Elementary to go to Washington, DC as part of their Social Studies curriculum. LAWA’s involvement includes tutoring at several ESL schools, teaching Spanish at Pineville Elementary, participating in the Jr. Achievement Program as well as donating a library collection of Spanish books to Collinswood Elementary, volunteering at the CMS Choice Plan Fair and donating materials to Central Avenue Pre-School, etc.

Community Service
LAWA encourages its members to get involved with the community as volunteers in social service needs. The association has provided services at the health fairs of Mi Casa Su Casa and it has planned and coordinated free dental clinics and mammograms for Hispanic families in the area.  LAWA has assisted organizing drives for hurricane and earthquake relief operations, it has donated a wheel chair, books, toys, furniture, clothes and financial assistance to various citizens and organizations in need. In addition, we help prepare taxes for low-income families, as well as provide free translation services to various organizations in the area. LAWA has worked with Girl Scout Troops to assist Hispanic girls in the community.

Cultural Awareness. Arts and Science
In conjunction with the Mint Museum and the Latin American Coalition during Hispanic Heritage month, LAWA sponsors cultural events in our community such as the Latin American Festival and the Latin American Forum. The association sponsors presentations of Hispanic Culture at various public and private schools in the city. LAWA participates with activities at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Community School of the Arts, as well as the Levine Museum of the New South.  The association is committed to promoting writers, artists, dance and theatre companies in addition to musicians to share with the community the richness and diversity of our Hispanic culture.
